Mrs. Lucille Knight Flakes
April 1, 1933 - August 5, 2018
Mrs. Lucille Knight Flakes of Hephzibah, GA, dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt died peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, August 5, 2018, at the age of 85. She was born to Arthur and Alice Knight in McBean, GA, on April 1, 1933. She professed faith in Christ and has been a devoted member of Berlin United Methodist Church for her entire spiritual life.
Known to almost everyone as “Ma,” she was most in her element taking care of others. Ma loved the Lord, her family, her dogs, and Elvis Aaron Presley. She was united in marriage and spirit to Douglas Flakes on December 16, 1950. He preceded her in death on January 2, 2017. She was surrounded by dogs her entire life, but the mention of her pitbull Angel would always bring a quick tear to her bright blue eyes.
For those who knew her well, Ma was always there to listen, although she would inevitably share her opinion and a dose of common sense. She was a constant presence standing by the stove, managing the chaos that ensued every Sunday after church as family and friends gathered at her home for the better part of the last half century. She was famous for her macaroni and cheese, squash casserole, and strawberry cake. As time marched on she eventually had to give in to gravity and sit in the chair left empty by the loss of her beloved husband, but she continued to look after all those around her.
Ma is survived by three children: Kenneth (Yuni) Flakes of Hephzibah, GA, Beverly (Robert) Post of Clarks Hill, SC, and Teresa Hayes of Greenville, SC; three grandchildren: Gina Flakes (Thomas Falace) of Columbia, SC, Sonya (Alex) Padgett of Evans, GA, Lora (Rusty) Bohannon of Grovetown, GA; five great-grandchildren: Ava, Ella, and Watson Bohannon, and Walter and Lilah Padgett; one sister: Mildred Johnson.
The family would like to thank Lisa Thorne for her devotion and care, as well as Trinity Hospice Group.
Ma will be laid to rest at 3pm Sunday, August 12, 2018, at Berlin United Methodist Church, next door to the yard where she spent the summers of her childhood and grew into the woman who made a lasting impact on so many lives. The family will also hold a visitation before the funeral service at the church at 2pm.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Hands to Paws Dog Rescue, 1727 Forest Creek Rd, Augusta, GA, 30909 or Hands2paws.org, or Berlin UMC, 1518 Heph-McBean Rd, Hephzibah, GA, 30815.
