Mrs. Betty Sue McKnight Widgeon

July 22, 1932 - August 26, 2018

Betty Sue McKnight Widgeon of North Augusta, SC passed from this earthly life on August 26, 2018 in Augusta, Georgia after a brief illness.  A beautiful and talented singer, as a teenager Betty sang every week on the radio in the “Colonial Showboat” and performed in the Elks Minstrels. She also performed in the “Youth Review” singing competition at the Miller Theater and won the top award.

Betty graduated from the Augusta all-girl high school, Tubman High. She attended Secretarial School where she learned typing, short hand, filing and many other skills that benefited her career. She worked at the Medical College of Georgia when it was called “Talmadge Memorial.” She worked for Macuch Steel. Then she worked for the cardiologists, Drs. Mucha, Reeves and Smith for years. Subsequently, she went to work at Morrison-Knudsen Construction, then finally SRS nuclear facility for Bechtel Corporation, where she retired.

Betty was raised Episcopal, but went to the Second Baptist Church in Augusta one Sunday and met her life mate, Wallace Widgeon who was teaching a teen Sunday School class. They married and had four daughters. They have been married for 68 years. Together they joined Peace Haven Baptist Church and have been attending church and Sunday School regularly.

One of Betty’s favorite verses was the Prayer of Jabez:

“Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory,

that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil,

that I may not cause pain.”         1Chronicles 4:10

She loved her husband and family very much and called her daughters her best “friends.” She cherished each grandchild, great grand and nieces and nephews as well, taking some under her wing as if they were her own children.

Her hobbies included birdwatching, pets, crocheting, land and property acquisition, taking Caribbean cruises, collecting decorative plates, and she was an avid reader. She was quite the philanthropist, assisting those that she saw in need.  Betty was a bit of an activist, often responding to events around the CSRA with a published rant or rave or letter to the editor.

Betty is preceded in death by her biological mother, Julia Hicks Hall McKnight; biological father, Lonnie Hall; great aunt who raised her, and Betty called her “Mama”, Julia Jones; great uncle whom Betty called “Daddy”, Jim Jones; sister, Jeannie Bates Bellamy and daughter, Julia Allace Widgeon.  She is survived by her life mate and loving husband, Wallace Widgeon; children, Patricia (Andrew) Bonsal, Lynda (Ken) Gribek, Nancy (Rege) Strauss; grandchildren, Amy Crawford, Thomas (Sandie) Crawford, Crystal (Mel) Dickerson, Natalie Young, RJ Strauss, Martin Strauss, Chace Strauss; great grandchildren, Sarah Crawford,

Lindsey Lee, Cameron Lee, Rebecca Crawford, Brendan Gribek, Moya Collier, AJ Sutton, Sophia Capitani, Vin Dickerson, Sophie Young, Max Capitani; first cousins, Camille Usry, Dan Singletary, James "Skeet" Hicks, Joany Protain (and her other brothers and sisters).

Memorial Service will be on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Peace Haven Baptist Church, 3181 Martintown Road, Edgefield, SC 29824.  In lieu of flowers the family request donation to the local animal rescue organization, Molly’s Militia, P.O. Betty Thanks for all your love, caring, worrying and words of wisdom. Thanks also for the Motherly advice you gave me since my Mother passed. Keep watching over us and assist us in our daily challenges. I am a better man because of you. You will be sorely missed but I know you are with God and will provide oversite and guidance until we meet again in Heaven. With all my love.

When we were little, she was the most gentle and kind hand that tenderly rubbed your growing pains. When we were teens all our friends thought she was the sweetest mom ever. Later, she sparked little buds of interest in us that later became intense hobbies. I remember she told me "Go look in the western sky right after the sun sets... the brightest "star" you see is Venus." When it was there just like she said it would be, I thought "Wow, how did she know it would be there?!" and I started reading. Her audacity with bureaucrats and red tape taught us all how to handle obstacles (or to run to her and she would show us how). I miss her now and will need her wisdom in the future, but her mission on this earth is over. We must pick up the baton and run, remember what she taught us and add to it for our own children. I love you, Mom!

My mommy will be missed every day I live she was my best friend and confidante. There are no words to describe the pain of losing a parent. Losing a parent and best friend is unbearable. One day I will see her beautiful face again and until that day, I will live my life I’m her honor and as she would be proud of me. Love , honor, respect, devotion is all we have on this earth to show how we feel about someone. It’s our word to God. Thank you Mom for teaching me that. To heaven and back again, your loving daughter Nancy

My dear sweet cousin, so much I want to say...You welcomed me wholeheartedly into my beautiful family with open arms; I will cherish the memories forever. Leaving South Carolina for home in Virginia will never be the same without sharing that last cup of coffee with you and Wallace. My thoughts and prayers are with your family as we endure our loss together. You made a tremendous difference in my life and I have been truly blessed being a part of your life. Go rest high upon that mountain knowing you touched every soul who had the fortuity of crossing your path. My heart and love forever you have.
