September 16, 1999 - September 8, 2018
Surrounded by family and friends at his home in Martinez, Jonathan Benedict, 18, was returned peacefully and with a smile, to his rightful Owner the morning of September 08, 2018 due to muscular dystrophy-related matters. Johnny was born on September 16, 1999 in Augusta, GA to Lee and Eva-Marie Benedict.
Being diagnosed with autism and muscular dystrophy before his second birthday, Jonathan was always happy and full of love and brought a smile to those he encountered. He amassed affectionately several nicknames (Angel, Buddy, Big Guy, Probie, JB, John-John, The Man) and a large team of admirers, supporters, teachers, teacher assistants, and caring doctors, therapists and caregivers. He loved school, Katie’s Pool, going for rides, music, compliments, being around other people, especially ladies (when he turned up his charm a few notches), and being around family.
Left with countless happy memories are his parents, grandparents, one great-grandmother, godparents, many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins who spoiled him rotten, and many members of TEAM JOHNNY.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of the Augusta branch of Affinis Hospice, and Professional Medical Fulfillment of Opelika, AL.
To honor Jonathan’s life and memory: the staff of Affinis Hospice 1365 Interstate Parkway, Augusta, GA 30909 was very helpful, professional, and caring. A donation in his memory will help Affinis continue its work; Katie’s Pool, Claudia Collins, Adaptive Aquatics Program Director, The Family Y, 3750 Wheeler Road, Augusta, GA 30909, provided Jonathan many years of joy and benefit. A donation in his memory to its scholarship fund will help those with special needs and financial needs receive necessary therapy; Riverside Middle School, Mrs. Jennifer Bowlby, 1095 Furys Ferry Road, Evans, GA 30809 is where Jonathan spent his final seven years of schooling. A donation in his memory to his class will help Mrs. Bowlby provide cleaning supplies, spare clothes, specific snacks, and therapy items for her wonderful students.
Visitation will be on Friday, September 14, 2018 from 5:00-8:00pm at Arlington Burial & Cremation, 1220 George C. Wilson Drive, Suite C in Augusta. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at 11:00am at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church, 4921 Columbia Road in Grovetown.

I am a Camp All Stars volunteer and every summer since my 8th grade year I volunteered with Jonny as my buddy. He always had a charming smile and loved the ladies. His favorite thing to do was swim it Katie’s pool, there he always had the biggest smile on his face. It hurts my heart to have not known sooner. My summers are going to be so different without my Johnny, wheeling him around or swimming with him. He will be greatly missed and he always knew how to put a smile on the faces of those he encountered!Breanna Schiller - December 12 at 1:21 AM
i am so sorry to hear of your son's death. I wish I had known. I will be praying for you as you deal with this loss. I know it leaves a hole in your lives, but you have good memories. Use those to get you through the rough times and know that he is with God and in a better place.Rose M. Layton - October 4 at 8:10 AM
Our thoughts, love, and prayers for Eva and Lee and for their families. We are so sorry and sad for your loss of Jonathan.Sue and Dan - September 15 at 11:57 AM
My heart aches that we could not be there with you at this time. We pray to see you very soon. No amount of miles between us could stop the light of Jonathan's love which he brought into this world. That light was bright with his million-dollar smile even to the very end. Our hearts break with you. The world will not be the same without our little man. But we rejoice that Jonathan is walking, running, talking, and sharing his wonderfully outrageous and contagious laugh with Jesus and with others who love him in a place where there is no more sorrow, tears, or suffering. I think Jesus saw him bat those long eyelashes again and needed to have Mr. Irresistible all for Himself. With much deep gratitude to Jonathan's amazing, loving parents and to his incredible caregivers and teachers. Your lovingkindness kept Jonathan here and HAPPY for the years we were blessed to have him. Meet us at the gate, Jonathan. Until then, I love you so much.
