Evalyn Delores Smith Wilkinson
October 16, 1929 - November 4, 2018
Evalyn Delores Smith Wilkinson, aged 89 and a resident of Brandon Wilde, passed from this life to her eternal home on Sunday, November 4, 2018. Evalyn cherished her family and friends and enriched their lives with her gifts and love. Left to honor her life are her two sons: Tom Wilkinson and Randy (Cindy) Wilkinson; grandchildren: Sierra Seljuk, Thommy Apley, Robert Wilkinson, Sam Wilkinson, Beverly Wilkinson and Zakary Wilkinson; and one great-grandson, Johnny Seljuk; her sisters, Thelma Plunkett and Lois (David) Fewkes; brother-in-law James Bunnage; a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 50 years, Bob; brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Edith Smith; sister Mary Jean Bunnage; brother-in-law Bob Woods; and brother-in-law Ron Plunkett.
Born October 16, 1929, just 13 days before Black Tuesday, Evalyn grew up on a southern Illinois farm, the 2nd of four children born to Thomas and Florence (Chalcraft) Smith. At age 14, she lost her mother in a tragic accident. A few years later, she was blessed with a loving step-mother, Evalyn (Crackel) Smith and sister, Lois.
After graduating from Albion Community High School, she attended the University of Illinois, where she majored in Home Economics, graduated in 1951 and met her husband. Pursuing Bob’s advanced education and career, they lived in Oklahoma, West Memphis (AR), Berkley and Davis (CA) and Albuquerque (NM), finally settling in Griffin, GA, their home for four decades. Evalyn and Bob made lifelong friendships in Griffin, many that continue to this day. Especially dear are Bill and Joann Powers, Allyne Baird and Nan Carley. A formative event for the family was the year spent in Finland while Bob taught and researched as a Fulbright Scholar, where more lasting friendships were forged. Evalyn received her M. Ed. in School Libraries from the University of Georgia. She served as a school teacher and media specialist for over 30 years, most of that in the Spalding County School system.
Evalyn loved all of the arts and excelled in needlepoint and quilting. She was very active in her community, especially in the church and the arts. She was a member of Griffin Music Club, Georgia Federation of Music Clubs, National Federation of Music Clubs, Griffin Spalding Art Association, Iris Quilters, Alpha Delta Kappa and the Choir of Griffin First United Methodist Church. Evalyn stayed busy after moving to Brandon Wilde in 2005, joining Chapter P of the Philanthropic Educational Organization and supporting many local music organizations. Her proudest moments were spent watching her grandchildren grow and being part of their many activities.
The family wishes to express deep gratitude to Evalyn’s Brandon Wilde community, especially her friends Margie Powell and Dorien van der Zalm and the caring, supportive staff team.
A memorial service will be held Friday, November 9, 2018, at 11 am at Wesley United Methodist Church, 825 North Belair Road, Evans, GA. The family will receive friends at 10 am. Dr. Greg Porterfield will officiate. Those attending the service are encouraged to wear purple in Evalyn’s honor. Interment will be private in Griffin, GA.

My deepest sympathies for your loss. Mrs. Wilkinson was my elementary school librarian (they weren't called Media Specialists back then) and I still remember her fondly. She helped contribute to my life-long love of reading.Asheley Carpenter - November 13 at 12:14 PM

Prayers for peace and comfort during these difficult days. May they quickly be replaced with the beautiful memories of times shared as family and friends. I just read about Griffin First United Methodist and had not known she had lived there. My children's grandfather, Harry Lee Smith, was serving there when my son Lee was born in 1969. Small world. The kids definitely have the musical gene flowing from both sides. Love to all.Cris Barlow - November 6 at 4:31 PM
