Douglas Kenneth Byrne

October 17, 1941 - May 27, 2019

Evans, GA – Entered into rest Monday, May 27, 2019, Mr. Douglas Kenneth Byrne, 77, loving husband of Jeanie Byrne.

Mr. Byrne was born the middle son to the late William D. and Audrey S. Byrne, in New Rochelle, New York on October 17, 1941. He grew up in Larchmont and moved to Texas with the United States Air Force in 1962. After a deployment to Southeast Asia, as a Broadcast specialist with the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service, returned to civilian life and worked for WVOX in New York then KBOX in Dallas, Texas. In 1967, he left radio and joined Rauscher, Pierce and worked with various investment banking firms until joining the State of Texas as Director of Funds Management for the Treasury Department. Subsequently, he moved to the Teacher’s Retirement System as a fixed income portfolio manager. In 1987, Mr. Byrne moved to Jacksonville, Florida with the Barnett Banks Trust Company as a retail trust, fixed income funds manager and trading department manager. He retired from Barnett as a Senior Vice President and worked as a Regional Investment Manager for the First National Bank in Palm Beach.

He finally retired in 1999, returning to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida and served several charities as a consultant and board member, culminating as Chairman of the Board of Catholic Charities, Jacksonville.

Mr. Byrne’s interests were varied and wide, from actively participating in multiple musicals, dramas and several seasons as a supernumerary with the Dallas Civic Opera to writing poetry and prose. He loved golf, playing many of the better known courses in the East and South. He was an active member of the Sawgrass Country Club, Ponte Vedra Inn & Club, Deerwood Country Club and Onion Creek in Austin, Texas. He also enjoyed ocean travel, having visited 42 countries in his 35 cruises. He could politely greet you in seven languages, none of which he could speak fluently, but felt it important to make the effort.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanie, three daughters, Michelle Brigante of Eastvale, CA, Frances Lee Benning of Eagleville, TN, and Robyn Sears of Flowery Branch, GA, two stepsons, David and Kevin Batten of Jacksonville, FL. He was blessed with eleven grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his oldest brother, Bill (Pat) of Ridgewood, NJ, and younger brother, John (Karen) of Hartford, CT.

The memorial service will be private.
